A political cartoon by the famous Thomas Nast in 1874 in Harper's Weekly depicted the GOP (Republicans) as an elephant "demoloshing the flimsy planks of the Democrats".
Although the donkey was first used politically while Andrew Jackson was running for President (his opponents called him Andrew Jackass), Thomas Nast revived this symbol as well in 1870 with a cartoon titled "A Live Jackass kicking a Dead Lion", also appearing in Harper's Weekly.

I'd rather be an elephant than an ***, that's for sure.
However, Elephants have great minds, are very smart, with great memories. did you know that?
donkeys, what are they good for? elephant with one step could smash the donkey.

Democrats have smaller johnsons, so they could fit in a donkey.
Republicans are packing more meat, so they stepped up to the elephant.
