Unable to access shared folders on LAN through router. HELP?

I'm on college LAN, and usually i can access shared folders (ex. \\foldername), but recently i installed a router and i cant acess it anymore, when i unplug the router and connect PC straight to ethernet jack i can access folders. How do i configure my router to let me bypass it?

The router changes your IP address, putting you on a different subnet than the folder you are trying to get to. Routers use NAT (Network Address Translation) to do that- the only way around it is to use port forwarding- the steps to do that really varies by router- go to the router website, poke around. There are tutorials around. I am pretty sure you can set aside a specific port for your school LAN. The downside is the port goes to one machine, and one machine alone. That means you have to use that machine to get stuff from the share, and then put it on a share of your own. A big hassle, yes, but it beats fighting for the one port in the dorm.
