Advice on where to live in New York City?

I'll be shifting to New York in Dec. I've got a job working at State street...

I'm not sure how and where to go about looking for apartments...any advice...and I have a budget of up to $1,600. (I only need a one bedroom apt, in a safe neighbourhood, that's not too far from work)

Thanks!

you should definitely get a real estate agent to help you. this is a really helpful directory (if you don't already have one) and there are tons who specialize in rentals...i mean it is New York and all ;)

I'm a New Yorker, so if you want to stay in Manhattan, prepare to pay big. Spanish Harlem isn't so bad. A decent studio will go for about $900 and a one bedroom about $1000. Prepare to pay first and last months rent. Some may want a deposit and if you go through a broker, prepare to pay steep fees there, too. I have relocated to the Bronx and the area near Yankee Stadium isn't bad at all. I have a one bedroom for $800 that is big and has four closets. It's got security cameras and gates. Also, keep in mind that in Manhattan, closet space is scarce. You will be very luck if you have a closet at all.

Try to keep you options open to Queens (check out Astoria) or Brooklyn. You may not get a place close to work, but the subways are pretty reliable.

Also, watch out for bad building management companies: Pinacle, R.E. Management.

Try Southern Westchester County. A train ride would be only about half an hour to Grand central and you can get a nice larger place for $1600.

you will ought to start procuring around for residences on line to work out which components you have got sufficient money, besides as what length place of residing. i found my place of residing on Craigslist, nonetheless i've got heard some people say a great sort of commercials on it are unreliable or phony. uncertain approximately that, because of the fact that I had no issues of it. and needless to say it would be ultimate to guard a job until now shifting, yet this is way less complicated mentioned than finished. additionally, this is incredibly helpful to stay for a minimum of a year because of the fact that 6-month leases tend to be pricier, in my journey.
