During a smash with a hammer two end of a metal show a potential difference. That is piezo electricity.

During the smash electrons are displaced.

Piezoelectricity is a property of certain materials (like Quartz SiO2). They are able to transform a mechanical force into an electric impulse and vice versa. That is why quartz is very used in watches (it vibrates about 32000 times per second. Watches have mechanisms that recognize those vibrations, making the watch extremely accurate with the counting of time)

What I remember from geology in college (1979 - so quite a way back), was that if you put a small charge through a quartz crystal it vibrates at a constant beat. You can measure this and use it in watches to keep the timepiece constant. They said that this was called Piezoelectricity. So quartz watches really do a have a quartz crystal in them.

    Hope this helps.

Its normal electricity, but it is made from deforming the structure of certain "piezoelectric" crystals. Its used in things like cigarette and gas cooker lighters.

It also works in reverse, where applying a voltage to a crystal causes it to vibrate - like in a quartz clock and the real time clock in a PC.

more simply, piezoelectricity is a voltage potential that develops because an material's shape has changed (not all material's, not to sound redundant byt only piezoelectric materials)
