What is the difference between a ukulele and a cavaquinho?

From what I can gather, the ukulele is a Portuguese cavaquinho that is tuned differently...is this correct? Can anyone elaborate? I'm wanting to learn how to play some samba music but in the US its hard to find a cavaquinho...
