What is your opinion?

There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments, and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance - that principle is contempt prior to investigation

Nicely said. Opening one's minds to possibilities is the only way to learn anything. No point in investigating something if you think you know the answer and refuse to see any other.

I think I would question anything out of Herbert Spencer's mouth very carefully. The father of " social Darwinism " is not a good maker of quotations. For instances; say I had utter contempt for eating dog waste; prior to investigation and on the most flimsy information. Against all argument to the contrary, also. I think I could live with my everlasting ignorance and contempt. You can substitute myriad things in place of dog waste.

PS I am fully aware of his meaning, but Herbert Spencer was a practitioner of " contempt " to all rebuttals and final refutation of his philosophy by G. E. Moore

if I'm understanding this wright, I agree. But there is more, you have to compare, think your own mind and get knowledge based on cognition. justOne
