if you don't get a dry socket (you can prevent by following doctor's directions - i.e. not drinking from a straw, rinsing vigorously, etc.), the pain is usually minimal. during, usually, you are sedated and feel nothing. afterward, you can take painkillers. the doctor does prescribe something like vicodin, but if you are on a liquid diet (it does hurt to chew at first), it is not advised to take it -- it can induce vomiting if you take such a strong medication on an empty stomach. and if you feel like you really need the meds, def eat some yogurt at first, at least, to coat the stomach and prevent irritation.

I found when I had all of mind removed that it was discomfort rather than pain. While they are being removed I felt a lot of pressure as the dentist was pulling them out. After they were removed, my mouth felt as though it was bigger, as if there was more room in it than there should be. Definitely take whatever advise the dentist gives on medication before and after. And the main thing to remember is that there is more pain and discomfort in the future if you don't get it done.

I think you got lot of answers already, just would like to add that every case of wisdom teeth extractions is very unique. Sometimes we don't even need to General anesthesia. It's also helpful to take Advil one or two tabs before 1 hr of the surgery to help reduce postoperative discomfort. Best is to get a Panoramic xray taken and find out the type of wisdom tooth extraction is required- Full Bony Impaction, Partial Bony, Soft tissue Impaction, Mesio Angular , Disto Angular. Then it will be easy to answer your question of post operative discomfort with more precision.

I had all 4 of mine removed, and all of them were impacted so they had to be cut out. The surgery itself was a breeze, they put me to sleep for it. Afterwards though, I won't lie, I was in a lot of pain. They sent me home with percoset but it helps to take that stuff with food in your stomach and its really hard to eat so bring on the vomiting and then comes the worrying that you've dislodged a stitch or blood clot. I was out of work for a week and a half, it was awful. On the other hand, I did lose some weight from not eating solid food for 2 weeks and that is always a great thing!

You should be fine after the day you have it done. Don't eat any solid foods after the extraction. It could cause dry sockets and that is very painful. Your dentist will let you know what to do following the removal of the teeth.

I was put to sleep for the actual surgery. So I didn't feel anything during it.

As soon as I woke up, my mouth was still numb for about 2 hours. Then it started to hurt.

But the doctor had given me some pretty strong pain killers, and I loved them.

I had to eat mostly applesauce for about a week, but I had four wisdom teeth removed.

I had two wisdom teeth removed and i won't lie there is some tremendous pain but if you take the pain medicine it will feel so much better and you won't hurt as bad.

It really depends on your own pain tolerance and if there's any complications..

The extractions itself didn't hurt much at all but I had complications when I had my last one out that ended up giving me some of the worst pain of my life ( I had to have some of my jaw bone filed down.. The pain after that until I got my pain meds was horrific).

I had all four removed and I had no pain during and almost nothing after. I think I was lucky because the tooth roots were cone shaped with no branches and they weren't impacted (under or partly under the gumline, so dentist has to dig them out).
