There are so many out there. Yeah, AVG Free worked great, (for a year) but it is a trail thing I guess and it won't allow me to uninstall AVG. So for a FREE download it does work on anti virus and such. But now I get pop-ups saying "Installation error" like 5 times everytime I turn my computer on. I tried Spybot, the same AVG message wont go away. Web root, doesn't work either.
I bought $84 McAfee 5-in-1, the AVG still pops up. So beware of FREE anti virus downloads. Apparently even purchased anti virus/spyware won't get rid of AVG FREE.
Additional note: I read "Classic" responce about SUPERantispyware and am down loading it now to see if it can help me out. I will let you know. 36 minutes and counting.....
Problem still there! Reboot effort made no changes.
I would NOT use SUPERantispyware!

In my spare time I test antivirus program an antispyware programs to see if the perform as claimed. An especially to see if there is any hidden embedded virus in their program or the wizard installer used to guide you through the installation.
In my own personal opion after testing every knwo antivirus program I use Avast free home personal use. There corporate version is the same, they just make corporate pay.
http://www.avast.com/ Avast is out of Prague, you will get state of the art techology with an excellent background scanner that catches a virus in real time before it will enter your system. Plus automatic updates two or three times per day. There is always a pop up in the tray that will say virus updates have been updated. Or if you are away from you pc and you have your speakers turned on a male voice will come on and say virus updates have been updated. Also the same voice if a virus has been found and cleaned by the background scanner. I have never had one virus in nine plus year with this program.
They will ask you for your email address so they can send you your free key that is good for one year. After one year all you have to do is request another key.
I don't know of any other free or purchased antivirus programs that has techology that works as good as Avast.
Take that back as in my back up computer I have a purchased antivirus program from Beijing, China, that is used by the Government of China. They charge a one time fee for life of $29.99 which includes all auto updates, background scanner, new versions an excellent support.
Both are equal in my opinion to protect you against antivirus attacks.

Do a yahoo search for AVG anti virus. It's a good anti virus program, just make sure you download the free version not the pay version. With the free version you can only download updates and scan your computer once a day.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

I use a program called AVG. Downloaded it right off the net, and it works great! Can set it up to do anti-virus checks once a week or whenever (all that kinda good stuff!)

Give up using Windows, and install Linux on your computer. Linux is immune to all viruses, malware, spyware and adware.
Go to www.distrowatch.com to find out how to get all the popular flavors of Linux...
