WindowsXP startup problem?

When I turn on my laptop I get this message:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows setup using the original setup CD ROM" . The problem is I don't have the setup CD. I keep turning it on and off and get the same message. Can anyone help me?

I think you are going to have to call the maker of your laptop and/or Microsoft Tech Support.

Try safe mode. F8 key while booting. Also if its a laptop the restore cd may be built int a seperate partition on the harddrive. watch the startup screen for a prompt to restore the system, by on of the F keys, like F10 ....
