frames can be re-used provided the maker still supports the model.
but the great public now want "the latest designer fashion" and manufacturers are happy to meet/encourage the demand.
Unwanted glasses can be donated to poorer countries.
Throughout the health industry there is no regard to environment. plastic items, packaging etc are never marked with plastic recycling id. eg disposable contact lens cases.

I never change my frames! I've had the same pair of frames for six years. I've never heard of this. Last time the guy said my frames might be too old and brittle (yeah, right!) to put new lenses in, but those frames were VERY expensive, and I still like them, so I don't plan on changing them any time soon. I just said, "Try anyway, I don't want new frames," and there wasn't a problem. Just try telling them you don't want new frames. IS there such a thing as "one time use" frames? Maybe next time spend a little more for sturdier frames. I may have spent a little more for mine, but I would've spent twice as much by now, if I changed them every year.

They just want a profit.
Look at it this way: I can go into the 99 cent store, and buy a pair of reading glasses with a decent frame for $1.08. Try going to your optician and finding frame for less than $100.

Do opticians themselves design frames?
If the company you use won't fit your new lenses into your old frames, go somewhere else. There's lots of competition on the average high street now.
