what do people do this to countercultural music?
like punk and hardcore. we try to sing about how the world is killing nature and taking our freedom of speech, and what we need to do for social reform. but people just call it emo and go listen to catchy phrases and gayness from justin timberlake. i am angry against the world. its true. but i don't cut myself, or listen to homos like fall out boy or hawthorne heights. how about bad religion, rise against, minor threat? like sum 41 used to be irrisponisible and punky. that was cool. they were popular and everything, but when they come out with a hard rock/punk record with social commentary, nobody likes em anymore. FU*K mainstream music and all the black wannabe gangsters!!! what do you think?

Hope you don't mind a Boring Old Fart weighing in on this one but you're running into the same thing that every counterculture throughout history has had to deal with. One of the establishments most tried and true tactics is to co-opt both the message & the means of getting that message out & turn these into mindless pap that threaten nobody's peace of mind. For all the stereotypes (many well deserved) of boring stoned out hippies too wasted to give a damn about anything, the counterculture in the 60's started out full of anger about freedom of speech, war, the environment , etc. The media largely ignored these issues & concentrated on the drugs & styles, Madison Avenue turned the counterculture into an advertising strategy to sell oodles of the corporate garbage that we were supposedly against, sickening no-talents like the Osmonds had Top 40 hits with "protest" songs about universal love & the environment. The truly comitted like you finally wore out beating their heads against both the established order & all the wannabes that had the look down right & took all the right drugs but couldn't be bothered with the issues that fueled the counterculture in the first place. These tactics obviously worked well then & have stayed in place since. You're also running into the fact that most people are AFRAID to get truly angry. This requires effort & upsets all the things that make them comfortable. Why listen to somebody like Bad Religion that requires actual involvement with the music & actual thinking about whats being said when you can turn on some mindless pap background noise that requires no effort at all?
All you can do is keep the faith in the music & issues that you believe in, keep your anger alive but don't let it turn into "whats the use " resignation, see all the lies & bullcrap in front of you & don't swallow any of it, and hope for the day when & if people finally wake the hell up and see what little drones we've all too willingly let ourselves be turned into. Don't lose the anger, USE the anger!!!

Hey I answered one of your questions earlier! Yeah I totally agree with you. I have a huge taste for Manson, Slipknot, Spineshank, Disturbed, Stone Sour, and many more but at the same time, I'm a trance dj. Let us not be judged! F*k Commercial garbage! It sucks. If it ever enters the charts at a high point, you know that band will never be the same again!

Honestly. FOB sucks and kids these days just listen to whatever they hear of TV. They mainly close their minds on one type of music and stick to it. :C
