How do I remove or clean a carpet which has light white paint marks?

There is a very light coating of paint which covers the middle of almost every step going down the stairs, Its as if paint has been cleaned from the bottom of someones shoes but they have not cleaned it properly and then walked down the stairs.

Try a product called "goof off" it is very good at removing old paint. There are knock off products out there that look simular and have simular names but they are not as good. Make sure it says "Goof Off" (like the kid who skips school).

I used to paint and clean houses and apartments for a living to get them ready for new tenants, and I used a product called "OOPS" which you can purchase at your local big discount chain such as Wal-Mart or K-Mart. It comes in a retangular metal can, white with black and red letters, and it takes the paint off of everything. Plus, it has never discolored a carpet that I've used it on. You can even use OOPS to get out paint and gum and such from fine fabrics. Use it in a well ventilated area! Try it, you won't be sorry.

Depends what sort of paint it is, if it's gloss it's very difficult and you may as well buy a new carpet. With emulsion soap and water can do it failing it that 'Stain Devil' will do the trick it's fantastic. Hope this helps.

Can I suggest an alternative approach - claim on your house insurance for a new carpet ? (If that is appropriate in the circs - eg if the carpet wasn't like that when you bought the house but the problem has occurred during your ownership of the carpet)

You could either try and remove it with Brush cleaner, that removes dried in paint from anything.

Or, get some sandpaper, and just rub over the paint, this will remove dry paint.

White Spirit.. Does the trick. But don't rub it in too hard..Pour it on the paint,, leave it to sit (not tooo long) then use warm water and sponge and rub it off gently.

Use goo gone and a good industrial carpet cleaner

if its emulsion paint, then some vanish may get rid of it..if its gloss then it wont come off if its been there a long time.
