i have a rottie as well!!! I have done a lot of research before ending up with this breed.... i can tell you they are very easy to train very smart and they have a very strong bond with their owner.... you need to train the dog at a very early day because they are very stubborn and narrow minded. if you let them for example on the couch as puppies then it will be impossible to train the otherwise!!!!
this breed has some disadvantages that you should consider...
they are very prone at parvo disease as puppies and in general they are prone to hip dysplasia and heart attacks. so if you want to avoid these problems you need to keep him fit by a good nutrition diet and a lot of exercise.... you shouldn't over feed him otherwise if you end up with a fat rottie you will have the above problems :(
try to make him a strong dog and not an overweight dog!
I do believe you will be very enthusiastic and in love with this breed, they are so loyal and loving and with patience and good training you will have a smart, faith-full friend for life!!!!
good luck :)

Get whatever breed you want, just remember to be the "pack leader". One more thing if you didn't know this already the Rott was bred for herding and originally they didn't look like barrels walking down the street like you see these days. So as far as the herding instinct you need to make sure that is under control because they will try and herd anything up and if it becomes an aggressive dog on top of that it may herd then attack. A good trainer of people is Casar Milan (not sure of spelling), The Dog Whisperer. GOOD LUCK!

As with all dogs it is important that you consider the kind of dog you are wanting and the needs of the dog and whether or not it's realistic to expect that you would be able accommodate them. Too many dogs end up being abandoned or become homeless shelter statistics because the owners were unable to accept responsibility probably because they did not assess properly what these responsibilities might entail in the first place.

The most important reason would be that they can get aggressive and they could not listen to your commands. But if you train him well, there really should be no problem.
A friend of mine has a Rott, who is very jealous when his owner talks to people and he wants to bite them. But if my friend says "No" than the dog just freezes.

A relative had a female that was such a sweetie. Whatever you do, avoid bloodhounds. They are a handful. I recently heard a good description of them, intelligent, but not trainable.
