The problem is that so mant people recorded it in a short period of time. Are you sure you know the first one? A guy named Johnny O'keefe recorded it in 1962 (I think) but I'm not sure this was the first recording.

Chubby Checkers comes to mind. Of course I'm probably thinking of a different song.
