The car seat harness should fit snuggly against the baby's body. They have covers for the actual car seat that keep the baby warm but still allow the seat belt to do its job.

The straps need to be snug & the coat could interfere cause the baby to not be restrained properly in the event of an accident. An easy way to keep the baby warm is to buckle the baby in the car seat and the tuck a blanket or two around her.

I would be wary of people who say "I did it & my child was fine". If they were never in an accident, of course having the baby in a coat isn't going to matter. But you never know when an accident will occur and it's better to be safe than sorry, especially when using a blanket is just as easy as using a coat (maybe easier with a newborn)

You shouldnt put a thick coat on a baby in a car seat becaue then you have to loosen the straps and if in a accident the straps would not be snug enough to properly hold the child causing whip lash or even worse injuries. the best way to have a infant in a carrier car seat is the fitted covers that go over the car seats i belive you can buy them at walmart for less than $20.00. and they are wonderful. The best way to insure that the carseat and baby are safley in the car is to go to a local fire station and have them install the carseat/carseat base. they are certified. i know it sounds crazy "how hard is it to put a car seat in" to have it properly installed and safely instaled hard. The fire fighters dont midn and here in KY they give you what the call a CHAD sticker. a child that was with his baby sister was in a car accident and the sitter did not make it and they had no way of identifying the child. but luckly one of the nurses reconized him and they were able to contact his parents.

I know i included a bunch of other information but carseat safety is very important to me.

In my opinion, as long as baby is secured in the car seat it's OK to have a coat on. Hospitals say many things, and most if it is one nurse opinion/experience. During our 5 day stay at the Hospital each new Nurse had a different advice for us. Often conflicting options.

I have not looked this up, but I don;t believe there is a law that say no COAT allowed in the baby seat. Your daughter is the one who has to rise the baby, and she and her husband are the one make all the calls. Not the hospital.

I was told the same thing because the car seat is made to fit snugly right up against the child. Large, bulky coats could cause the product to fail. My child was born in the fall in the mountains, so the suggestion given to us was to put her in and fasten the car seat, then either tuck a warm blanket in, or as she got older put a coat on her backwards on top of the car seats harness system.

because god forbid you where in an accident the coat makes a false security, the baby can easily slip out of the coat and out of the belts on the seat because the coat makes more room for the baby to fall out.

Just put the baby in and use blankets to keep the baby warm.

I would put the coat on anyway. You are smart enough to adjust the car seat after. The hospital thinks they know it all but they are just people too.

i suppose it makes sense, but my children have always worn coats int here car seats and they have been fine. And remember that when we were kids our parents let us roll around on the seat as car seats hadn;t even been invented yet. Coat or no coat I am sure the baby will be fine
