Will a PS3 from Hong Kong play US PS3 PS3 PS1 games and US blu-ray DVDS?

I have a freind in Hong Kong who was asking me if he wanted to buy me a PS3 there (since they are like $100 usd cheaper) and send to me for christmas. I would like to, but remember something about PS games and blu-ray disks being region specific so the games/movies I would buy here would not work on the console? Can any one else confirm this?

There may also be some problems with the online part, right?

The hong kong version is not the Japanese version but the US version but on region 8.

Does anyone know?

PS3 will be released on 17 Nov in Hong Kong and the retail price is HK$3780 (around GBP270) for 60GB version. And it is fully comparable with all ps & ps2 games.

You can go the following link have a look however the web site is in chinese. So you can use the google translator to convert it to read.

hi. i was considering getting a ps3 from canada, as i have to wait for the stupid march '07 release in the uk. in answer to your question, DON'T!!!! if you buy it from another region, sony will not cover it under warranty, and you will need that because in the first year or so, many bugs are spotted out in the console. if you own the bugged one, it will be extremely difficult, maybe even impossible to return it, as you may have to send it back to hong kong to return it to the retailer, and from my experience with asian retailers, they are stuck up. i brought my psp from japan, and i encountered problems. in the end, after a long fight, i got a refund, and i purchased a pal version from ebay. also, under sony's new rules, grey imports are illegal. i am not sure what imports mean exactly, but its just advice, research into it. the games are all region free. any games you get from any country will work on your console. ntsc games and console should work on your television, that only messes up if you use ntsc on pal. dvd's are regioned, you will have problems there, however you can get dvd region changers, i am sure 3rd parties will release one. in online aspects, i do not know. research that. hope this answer was helpful.

It's hard to tell, from what I remember Asia uses NTSC so that is the same but the region specific DVDs might be a problem, also the fact that it will run on 50 hz and 240 V instead of 60 hz and 120 V
