How to deal with litter box issues?
I live in a pretty small apartment and have to keep the litterbox in the bathroom. Let me tell you - it is NOT fun to get out of the shower and step right into crunchy litter on the floor. Unfortunately my cat, who I recently adopted, has used an uncovered pan her whole life and refuses to go near the covered box I bought, preferring instead to do her business behind it. I am wondering what other options I have. The mat I bought to catch the litter has been pretty much useless, as has "non-tracking" litter (she likes to dig).
Please help, this is just disgusting!
Is it really safe to let her out onto a second-story balcony? Wouldn't she jump off or something?

Try to find another spot in your apartment where you could move it. I have been there, and I know it's gross--I also tried the useless mat. You might want to switch the brand of litter you use, maybe something with larger pieces that would be easier to clean up and harder for the cat to throw everywhere. You can put a large towel down (that should remain hers) underneath the litter box and shake it out each day and you can wash it too. Hopefully this helps. : )

I have a friend who had the same problem. She eventually placed the box in a storage closet and left the door open.
You might try putting something around the box and not over it... kind of like a privacy screen. This would help to contain the litter to one area. Also, get the biggest box available. Some cats just love to dig in there and a big box is usually deeper which will help contain everything.
Some cats hate those no tracking mats and will aviod them at all costs.

I don't think the covered box will help you either. Show her the covered box and put the other one away and see if she will use the covered one. As for putting her outside, I doubt she will jump, but you will have to keep the door open so she will have access at all times to the litter box. You should find another place in the apartment to put it. I keep mine where the washer and dryer is. If you have a closet that you just store boxes in, put it in there and keep the door cracked so the cat can get in.

I feel for you cause I too have a cat and she likes to dig. I'm sorry to say that there isn't much you can do except keep sweeping. It seems to stay between their claws cause I find litter rocks all over my apartment. Maybe try turning the litter box the other way? I'm going to keep an eye on this one for other suggestions to help me too. Good Luck.... Covered boxes don't make a difference - tried that one also

Something that helped me when I lived in a studio apartment was making a section of flooring for the litter box to go in. I took a 3x3 foot board and then nailed little sides on it, just a couple of inches tall, then set her litter box in the center. I did put some peel and stick tile in the homemade box just to pretty it up. Then, she would just get litter on the box, and not all over the floor, which helped to contain the mess.

That is what my one of my cats do. I think it may be they are afaid on the coverd litter box and/ or the cat doesn't like the litter. When you catch her tell her no, and stuff her ( nicly) into the box. Tell her to go in there. If she still goes behind try new litter. Let her stiff the litter before you put it in. So she can get use to get. It worked for my cat. Well cats always land on their feet...hoply. If she jumps she mostlike can land it. But don't let her on the balcony.

Do you have a balcony? or a closet where you can put the box. Also I would change it frequently. I would try to get her to use the covered box by enticing her with something. Maybe put some catnip in the litter with the cover.

your apartment may be small, is there any way that you could put the littler box in your bedroom? maybe in a small area? i dont know how small your bathroom is, can you move it to another side? those litter mats dont do anything...my cats wouldnt even step on it, so ya, they are useless..the only thing i can suggest is maybe getting one of those electric cat boxes to keep the area cleaner..
