1. Answer this question: Why do I want to study international development?
2. What are the goals I hope to achieve?
3. How will my experience and education help me in inernational development?
4. Are you interested in history, sociology, business, environmental issues, anthropology and cultural studies?
5. Do you know anything about the major world religions?
6. Have you worked with people to help them, educate them, or managed or supervised people.
7. Would you like to live in a foriegn country???? Do you speak any foriegn language????
The foregoing will give you a good start on you purpose statement.
In the future you will be called upon to write many purpose statements for the progams that you will be supervising!!!!! You will need to be able to state clearly your objectives and goals.
International studies is complicated and includes many factors.
Here is some advice: BE SURE THAT THIS IS WHAT YOU ARE INTERESTED IN DOING. Answer this question: Why do I want to study international studies????
When you have answered that question ask youself this question: Are the any other professions I may be interested in???
If you need help determining what professions would interest you take an interest test. An inerest test is a psycological that relates success in given professions with patterns of inerest. There are several interest tests, one that I know of is called the Kuder Interest Survey.

A successful personal statement is a literate, elegantly written essay in which the student highlights her strong preparation for her intended area of study, articulates her planned area of study and her goals after completing this study, and demonstrates her facility with current theory and practice in this area.
In other words, why do you want to go to grad school? How have you prepared for graduate study thus far? What will you study when you are there? What theories and methods do you find most congenial in terms of your area of study? With whom do you want to study, and why? (Name the scholars you've found most inspirational or influential. You've chosen the schools to which you're applying on that basis, anyway, haven't you? You must state your reasons for wanting to attend THAT particular graduate program.) And finally, what do you plan to do with this degree once you earn it?
Therefore, you MUST tailor each essay to each program. A general essay simply will not do.
Best wishes to you!

There is a book called the "Purpose Driven Life" by Rick Warren. You can find a copy in any library. It contains a chapter with step-by-step guidence for writing a purpose statement. It would be a good idea to consider your aims in school and life after graduate school and incorporate something about those goals in your statement.
Good luck!

talk about YOU, your degree plan, asperations and what your going to do with that degree once you have it. Sound confident but not arrogant. Youll do fine.
