Did Rumsfeld "cut and run"?
A day after Democrats took control of Congress, he resigns. Was he scared to face the new Congress coming in? Was he worried he was going to be finally held accountable?

Most people agree that the Bush administration was unwilling to seem as though they were changing their minds about the war in Iraq so close to the election, but that the decision was probably made a long time ago for Rumsfeld to leave. If you'll remember, there was talk several weeks ago that Bush was looking into the idea that perhaps the path that we were taking in Iraq wasn't the right one, but almost as quickly, Bush went right back to "stay the course". It appears they did not want to seem weak or appear to be "flip-flopping", to use their phrasing. But in reality, they've finally figured out that the war isn't working and the majority of the people in the US know it.

I am looking forward to the return of the democracy. The monarchy of King George has been usurped!

He stooped and shat!
Then George put the warm load in a baggie, just like a good little suburbanite would do when walking a poodle, and trotted it up to the podium to explain that it really does smell like roses, but that America wants a new flower.

Yes he did "cut and run". Bush has failed to "stay the course" on Rumsfeld. He has "flip flopped" on his cabinet make up. In fact he has even "cut and run" from "stay the course", "flip flopping" again. When will he "turn a corner" and declare "mission accomplished" on his critics? Alas, it appears his presidency is in its "last throes".

Rumsfeld could no longer take the attacks and the President could no longer defend him.

Looks that way. I guess he's afraid of a long over due congressional subpoena.
