How should I cut my hair?

I have blond hair with blond highlights (to brighten it up but still keep it natural looking) - about mid back in length (just above my bra). It has long layers now and a few whispy bangs that I usually sweep to the side.

I was thinking of making my bangs thicker, cutting it to just below my shoulders and adding some darker color as lowlights (dark caramel or even a red).

What do you suggest???

Update:

I always like to go to the stylist with an idea in my head and see what suggestions she has to make it even better. I am just looking for additional suggestions - since my idea is pretty tame.

You don't say what your complexion is. Are you fair skinned, or med. or do you have a dark tan from the summer sun, etc. etc. I'm assuming that your natural color is light if you add blond highlights to brighten it up. What I would do if you want to color it yourself, buy the easiest hair dye to use. One is Nice 'n Easy in a reddish blond. Follow the directions BUT leave it on your hair for 1/2 THE TIME THEY SAY IN THE PAMPHLET. That way, it will be just a little reddish glow. Then GO TO A HAIRDRESSER and ask her to style your hair: If your hair is thick, have her cut bangs to the side like you want, but also ask her to give you a "layered" cut with the back shorter than the sides. When you style it, the little longer sides should be trained to curve under to give it a shape. Huge rollers can do the trick. the rest of the layers can be teased and then use a pick to fluff it up. It's a darn cute hairdo, and women of any age look well in it. The length of your hair overall shouldn't be beyond your shoulders, with the back a little shorter. Hope you like it. Good luck. When you look at your profile in the mirror, your hairdo should hang longer in the front than in the back. If you have thin hair, I would get a "feather-cut" bob, and if it's cut properly, the waves should fall right into place. Shampoo , dry, put on some spray Mousse, dry a little again, then FLUFF IT UP. That's very attractive, also, and you can still have side bangs if you wish.

Do what I did just hold your hair the length you want before you cut it.(like hold it or cover it so you can look in the mirror and see) If you dont like it then atleast you wont have to worry about it growing back.

If you trust your stylist, the best thing to do is let him/her do their thing. For the first time in my life I let mine do what she wanted and it was by far the best cut i've ever had. She did what looked good on me and I was hot to trot. Reminds me......I need to go back here pretty soon.
