No, you can't as it will not adhere well. On the other hand you can work with oil paint over acrylic with complete safety. In fact, most commercial canvas for oil painting are primed in acrylic.

Work over oil paint with more oil paint. The technique is simple.

    Painting Acrylic Over Oil

It's just a matter of personal choice. You can do anything in acrylics that you can do with watercolors, and some of the things you can do with oil painting. The one real advantage to oil painting is that you can make thinner and thinner shades of a color to add a semi-transparent effect to a painted object. In acrylics this cannot be done, as a thinner acrylic will not adhere to a thicker acrylic underneath it. Cleaning up with most oil paints requires very toxic chemicals. However there are now soy based oil paints that can be cleaned up with soap and water. Have fun painting!

Acrylic is far more versatile. You can use it for any effect from a wash to an impasto. You can use any inert material for pigment. Acrylic forms a permanent chemical bond with the layers of paint underneath it. If you want to slow the drying process, you can use an additive for that as well. You can imitate any surface quality that you would find with oil paint with acrylics, and you can do it with a glaze or acrylic varnish after you have finished the painting. Be sure that you prepare the canvas correctly and prime it before you start your painting. Why do you insist on canvas? Masonite is cheaper, less fragile and requires much less preparation.

I did this over a very old oil painting that I never finished. The oil painting was about two-years-old so it was very dry. I put two coats of gesso over the canvas before I began the acrylic painting. And it turned out fine!

If it is dry, yes. Just cover the surface with a few coats of primer first. I often use acrylic and oils on the same canvas, and while there is a chance that the oils will eventually cause some problems with the acrylic on top, I have never had this happen. Paintings that I made over ten years ago with acrylic over oil still look just fine and there has been no damage...

    Good luck!

if it's really really dry u can, but it can be removed easily with a palette knife, one flick and it's gone. get peeled right off so I dont recommend it. also painting oil over acrylic does work pretty much ok but after a short while it will crack. tried it, now im dying to retouch the painting so i could sell it. so I think just stick with water based to water based products, and oil based to oil based products.

As long as the oil paint is dry, which takes up to a year no problem.

I often mix the two, but mostly use Acrylic as an undercoat.

Don´t literally mix the two othewise you get a lumpy mess.

no, because acrylic is water based, so the oil in the oil paint will come through, because the oil floats on water
