Cannot boot computer?
My brother-in-law is unable to boot his computer. When he presses the power button, the processor fan spins wildly (like it should when you first turn the computer on)... but continues to spin at high RPMs, even after the standard 2-5 seconds.
Nothing ever appears on screen -- even at the BIOS level, which makes me think the problem is related to the motherboard. The motherboard is only a couple of months old though, so I find it highly unlikely that one of its components has already failed.
Any thoughts?
I had a mental lapse when I submitted the question. The vocabulary I was attempting to use was to say that his BIOS is not posting. Seems to me that the power supply must be good -- I mean, it's getting voltage to the motherboard, and the motherboard is getting voltage to the CPU fan. In my experience, the BIOS will usually post, even if the memory isn't seated. While the video card might have something to do with it, that wouldn't explain the CPU fan not reving down after initial power up.

Open the case. Reseat all peripherals (memory, pci cards, the works) by removing and replacing or disconnecting and reconnecting cables. Try again. If the same thing happens watch the diagnostic lights (if there are any) and use those to troubleshoot. If it still fails take it back for service.

Bios checks the memory, then video before moving on to getting to the hard drive. The fact that you see nothing indicates that the memory modules are being read or the video card is being detected. Usually the BIOS will provide Beeeping noises to indicate errors but you don't mention those.
First two things I would try are, removing and reseating the memory and removing and reseating the video card.
Good luck

Can be a faulty or Un-seated RAM.
Try Revoving and putting back the RAM else you have to Replace your Motherboard

whats our target? you need to hear the PC (BEEP!) as its botting.
try the following. unplug all memory rams and plug only one. make sure you push it until it clicks both sides. if not, try unpluging your VGA card and in again, make sure its plugged right. if not, try unplugging the processor and back in again. in case you have another PC with compatable spec, try replacing the parts with ones from the other PC. trouble shooting might take sometime and may cause you to difect one of the parts. on your own risk.
