Information on school safety?

Where can I get data on school safety issues and whether they are on the rise. I'm interested in thefts, drug use and violence and what the schools and the police are doing about it.

Click on the link below. The NCJRS is an excellent reference to school safety issues. There are several links on the below site which will help you in locating your information. I was a school resource officer for several years and I can tell you that if your district employs them, they are a great source of information for you. In addition, your school district keeps stats on certain crimes within the schools. Give them a call. In reference to Columbine, the SRO was not on campus at the time the shooting first started; however, he was able to engage the shooters shortly after they entered the building. If he had not been there, there is a good chance that the carnage would have been much worse.

School is as safe as parents make it.

Police and sheriff depts cannot make a school safe. It costs too much money. The city and/or county will not foot the bill.

Crime is on the rise in schools -- and not all of it ever makes the news.

To research, check with your local law enforcement. Most depts keep the reports on file for public view. If an arrest is made on school property, it will be in a report. You should also visit your local juvenile court -- you would be surprised to see and hear what goes on there.

Schools have around 500-2,000 students. They have numerous doors and windows. They have 30-500 employees. And they are not built for security. Metal detectors at the front doors and 1-4 security people --- this is not security, it is just Public Relations.

You can't even spank children anymore. You really think people will allow the law enforcement community to do what is necessary to make the school safe?

Remember----Columbine had a school resource officer (cop) onduty at the time of their "incident".
