who makes a modern dvr sold in the US that does not have copy protection buit in?
I have a sony dvr but it won't record from hbo or other premium cable chanels. need to find one that will record movies from HBO etc

You might ask your cable company if they sell anything, or look at Disk Network. My Dish Network PVR will record anything on.
That stinks about Sony, I won't buy their stuff after that rootkit fiasco.
