According to Tickle's IQ test the average for the US is about 115.
It does vary from state to state be about 5 points here or there.
For your reference I took it when I was 20, I live in California and am female. I scored 145. Am not a genius, did not do great in school, just average. But I like to learn and read and figure out puzzles. IQ only has meaning as far as your potential and what type of thinker you are. What you do with it is up to you.

Average is 100 on any IQ test. It is set up on a Bell curve, so 100 is the mean. Below 70 is considered mentally retarded. Above 140 or 145 I believe is considered genious. Anything above 100 is above the average. Most people fall between 80 and 120.
Beware of the online IQ tests. They are not given in the appropriate manner and people tend to score high on them. They are more for fun and should be taken with a grain of salt.

The IQ of a population will be demonstrated in a bell curve, 100 being average. Mensa requires an IQ score of 154 I believe. Don't believe most of the folks that tell you their IQ is over 130. That would be a very, very few individuals.
50% of the population has an IQ between 90-109. Only about 10% of the population are over 120. Most of those over 120 will be found in engineering, teaching, etc.
Standard test used by professoinals are WISC and Stanford-Binet.

There is no standard IQ test, so trying to determine an average is difficult. On Mensa's website it says that a score of 132 on one test could be equivalent to a 148 on another.

I remember hearing that to operate a military tank, it requires a person of 100+ IQ points. But here's the kicker: the average IQ in that country is 90. But then again, I heard this about 8 years ago, so it could've risen.

Some people would argue that brain power as measure by IQ tests doesn't matter any more than EQ (ability to understand your own feelings, empathy, being sensitive to others, and self-control, etc) EQ is not the opposite of IQ but they need to be balanced..
IQ gets you the job, EQ gets you a promotion.

100, it really is precisely universal, one hundred sixty is genius below seventy 5 is retarded (medically) i trust. yet, keep in mind that IQ contains some aspect of controversy and ratings of intellectuals over the years have criticized the completed procedure and that i trust the consensus is that it purely measures a particular variety of intelligence. as an example, someone like Mozart may have scored universal on an IQ try because it has not something to do with flair, muscle memory (functional intelligence) and memory in connection with musical prowess. Kobe Bryant (i exploit him b/c i recognize he did not flow to school, it really is purely one type of compass yet for my party matches) has an rather severe aspect of what's said as functional intelligence, like quite a few athletes- it has to do with coordination, actual potential, relative potential, "highway smarts" yet likely does not score severe on an IQ try in step with se. base line; IQ isn't each and every thing.

I think a better question would be do people use the IQ points that they do have.
