What is torrent and bittorent?

Question

I am a novice in computer field.  When I recently tried to download a file, it said it was a torrent file and i need to install a bittorent in the first instance.  Both the words are completely new to me.  I never heard them before.  Please help me understand clearly what are they, why are they and how its different from ordinary downloads.??

The TORRENT file is just the file that tells where the bits and pieces of the file you want are located.

The program that your computer needs is the program AZUREUS or BitLord. These handle the actual download of the file.

DOWNLOADING IS NOT ILLEGAL.
Many legitimate software companies use Bittorrents to D/L their software. The Pirate Bay and Torrentspy do not screen their torrent files though.

A Torrent may break one song into 500 pieces, U will download piece by piece from several people till file is complete, These programs work better for finding complete cd's or movies, not a single song
