wifi, getting access and using it in public...?
i just bought a new laptop with built in wireless internet. No easy instructions on setting it up, i just want to know how to be sure it's working and how to connect to it in "hot spot" places like coffee shops and libraries... are there any easy ways to find hot spots in your area?
ok, getting some good responses, but i failed to mention i am a complete computer moron... i know nothing about these machines other than how to turn them on/off.
*i found the wireless switch, move it to one side a little light turns blue move it the other way it turns orange.

I have done tech support for some good-sized companies, and you'd be surprised how many people fail to turn on the wireless antenna in their laptops! SOMEWHERE on that machine you'll find a switch; if you don't already know where it is, look up the machine's spec's online. As to finding locations - try http://www.wi-fihotspotlist.com/

most 'hot spot' are commercially located. if you have XP you can have it search for a WiFi connection automatically.
on some systems (hot spot) when you locate and attempt to connect you may fail open the IE or similar to browse to a web site. this may activate the hot spot's 'page' to allow you access through that particular hot spot

hello my friend as i know all of the public WLAN is using open authentication or an authenticated access to the server. They using a dynamic ip addressing to people hu want to uccess on the internet. If you want to know wether the place has a spot is just refreshing your wireless lan card and then it will automically detect the WLAN present.

go and download netstumbler (netstumbler.com) and you might be suprised how many hot spots you find. Look for the connections without the lock on them. :-)
