Sam in my two computers I have to free program that have already installed a fix for the flaw.

Active X gets a lot of bashing, but Active X and xml allows you to have more interactive web pages, and many web pages would not work with trem turned off. it is important not to get spyware and active X mixed up, many answers are about spyware. Spyware can install programs on to you PC, by using operating flaws and can get installed with out you seeing anything

Active X it self is not a risk, all it does is allows web sites to run controls from your PC not from their sever so they run faster as it does not have to send information back and froth along the web.

the truth is java or other scripts are far more dangerous as they run without you even seeing anything, this is why it is important to have a legit copy of Windows and update windows and virus protection regular.

File sharing programs is number 1 cause for spy ware. The software company it self often provides the software for free because in also installs advertising software which creates pop ups and spy ware which tells them what sites you go to so they can sell info to marketing companies. The content on these servers can also be virus, remember they are software or music pirates and often add virus to the software you download, also the program itself opens ports closed by windows firewall allowing people to attack you computer
