What can cause a LOUD left front wheel "grinding" noise in a '99 Pathfinder FWD?

It started suddenly. I drove it to work and no noise, when I left 3 hours later, it sounded like the wheel was going to fall off! I drove it 300 yards and pulled over to look and nothing was apparent.

I drove it at 60 mph for 5 miles and it was VERY loud, but didn't seem to pull left or cause the engine to strain to get up to speed. I pulled into a rest stop and felt the hub/wheel and it wasn't hot.

I proceeded to drive it another 4 miles at 60mph, then at 35 - 40 mph for 2 miles.

I stopped at a red light and put it in 4wd to see if it changed AND NO NOISE!!! I drove about 1/2 mile with no noise, then took it out of 4wd and it came right back. I tried to shift it back to 4wd as I was moving and it didn't quiet down, it stayed loud.

I pulled over and stopped, then shifted into 4wd and it was quiet again.

Everything looks normal underneath and the tranfer case drive shaft and trans axles turn by hand when it is not in 4wd and idling in park. HELP!

i own a repair shop, and it may have a bad CV joint in it this is what it sounds like ,especially when you said it made a grinding noise,it can also be a brake rotor on it with worn out shoes ,or a bad wheel bearing also,, and none of this will show up when its sitting still and it wont effect the transmission in any way,but it sounds serious enough to have it checked out by a good mechanic ,what ever is doing needs to be repaired as soon as you can get it done, good luck,i hope this help,s.

Not everything you can see. Drive into garage if you gonna tested in these way you may stopped and wait for recovery. Think to other people on the road.

Yeah my mum and dad get mad if I play All that continues to be or similar bands. Deathcore is noisiest for me. My chum listens to it and it doesn't sound like song in any respect to me purely random noise and random yelling.

to me it sounds more like you have a lock out going bad and trying to shift the front axles in as you are driving, your best bet is to have it looked at
