My first child had the cord wrapped around his neck at birth, thank god everything ended fine, from what I understand, it can be caused by the mother lifting her arms above her head a lot.

That is a terrible thing that happened to your neighbor, my heart goes out to her. The best of luck to you. You should ask your OB/GYN for more definite causes

Very rarely, a baby will have a knot in its umbilical cord; this isn't a problem unless the knot becomes very tight. More commonly, the cord is wrapped around the neck. Again, it isn't usually a problem unless the cord is wrapped very tightly.

There's nothing you can do to prevent this (or to cause it). It's an old wives tale that reaching above your head will affect the umbilical cord.

I was born with the umbilical cord wrapped twice around my neck. i am very lucky that i am not suffering from cerebral palsy right now. If you think about it its pretty simple. imagine your in a bag a little larger than a sleeping bag. and theres a rope in it. now your asleep. you roll a lot in your sleep and move about. it is very conceivable for you to get that rope twisted around you. (this is assuming that your not just sleeping on it lets say its attached to the top of the bag here.) the baby moves in the womb and the cord is right next to it. its quite possible to get wrapped in it either during the pregnancy or during birth,

when i had my son in 1979 old people told me don't reach for things because the cord is long and the baby has alot of room and you can move the cord. i got so scard until i had my baby I did not reach up high for anything. their could be more reasons though. i think she should of sued the doctor. my personal thought.

This is how my baby sister died. It all just happens on accident. The doctors think every things fine then they lose the baby.
