Wi-Fi for the Nintendo Wii. Complete explanation.?
Hi. I have a common cable internet conection (bandwidth of 1Mbps) and have no idea how Wi-Fi works at all.
But... in a week im getting my Nintendo Wii, which can connect to internet through Wi-Fi.
So I would like to know how does Wi-Fi works (for computers first) and what would I need to connect my Wii to the internet (and how much should that cost)
Please tell me that in "newbie" vocabulary.
Thanks!

Nintendo Wifi will work through Nintendo not GameSpy, but you should note that there will not be any online multiplayer games for the US till 2007 (their still working on the system). Nintendo Wifi, will work be you exchanging your code (you can find it in your system options, (this will be clear when you actually get the Wii and start it up)). Once you put in theirs in your "address book", and they do the same to you, your all set. You can play together, universally (your friends in every game that you two share that are online). Of course you can play with random people online too, and never set up a "friend".
However, it will still important for you to connect the Wii through Wifi (or cable through ethernet-USB cable), if you want to get extra features like the News, weather, and virtual console, and perhaps other downloadable content.
To do this wirelessly you need a router, if you don't have one already. (Check my first link). Now, not all routers may be compatible with the Wii, but major ones should definetly work (I'm only saying this as a just in case). Once you get the router you will get instructions on how to set it up. You should then setup a password for it (encrypt it with either WPA or WEP standards), this should be in your instructions. This should go smoothly, and will vary from router to router, so I can't give specifics. Look in your instruction booklet for help, and a step by step guide.
Next, once you turn on the Wii and get past your first set up, you have an option thing at the bottom left of the main menu. Click on it and you will be able to set up your connection (it will search for connections, then you click on the one you want, enter the password (WPA or WEP code), it will then test your connection, and your set). For a video, check out my second link.
After doing this you should be all set. If your having any troubles, you could of course look in your Nintendo Wii booklet, comes with the Wii, for more instructions, or ask away here.

Your cable modem probably doesn't have it built in, so you'll need to buy a wireless router. Just be sure it has the jacks in the back too. Wi-Fi is kinda like a remote controlled car. The signal passes thru the air. Just at a very high frequency. That's about as simple as I can say it. As far as cost goes, it won't cost nothing to get online, You'll just have to do a setup program (which should come with the Wii) so it can recognize the router. You're online experience will be limited to certain things tho. Multiplayer games and stuff will require you to first sign up with someone like GameSpy. Then when you and your buddies want to play online, you just go to the multiplayer screen on the game and log in. The wireless internet will do the rest. Blitz routers do good.

Well if you can use a laptop in your house(you have a wireless Router) you should be able to into the wii main menu and tell it to search for an internet signal and it will tap it. Or you can connect it to your computer via usb cable which then it can tap into the internet
All operations are done threw the wii it is pretty much the same as using wi-fi in the DS
Hop you understand that if you need a deeper explanation and you speed comp. GEEK i can give you a better won

This is because a Nintendo Wi-Fi connector can only work for up to 5 DS and ONLY 1 Wii. If your USB connector is already set up to work for your DS, then it wont allow you to re-connect your Wii to it. If you really want a Wi-Fi connection for your wii, get a LAN (local area network) adAdaptorailable through Nintendo) or another Wi-Fi adaptor. Hope this helps. Operasinger!
