Does anybody know of a boat motor for a raft that is good?
My husband bought a 5 person raft with a holder for a motor a few months ago and is really wanting a motor for it. Was thinking about 1 for Xmas. I know nothing about motors for raft boats. He is using it for fishing puposes in a lake. He was looking at a Trollling but I dont know what that is? Help me please if you can!

When you say raft, it makes me think that you are really referring to an inflatable boat. The holder for the motor is probably in the back (transom). If you get a look at it is would state on a plaque what the largest motor allowed is.
Not knowing the specifics I would suggest the following:
1. For trolling (going very slow and quietly while fishing) an electric motor could work but is very impractical if the boat does not have a hull. It requires batteries and chargers and uses up a Lot of space in addition to the motor itself. Some of them actually pull the boat versus pushing the boat. It looks like this http://www.sportsauthority.com/product/index.jsp?p...
2. A more general purpose motor would be a low horsepower outboard engine. This is a more expensive option but one that would work nicely. Yamaha makes a great portable engine for very small boats. You can check it out at http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outboard/products/subc...
The smallest one they make would probably be ok and would be the lightest to carry.
I would be happy to help you more if you do the following: write down the brand and model of the boat he has and email me directly. That's the only way to be sure. No sense in spending a lot of money on the wrong toy for your husband.

A raft should not use a motor, it should be rowed. But if you still desire a motor, anything more than a trolling motor would be too much for a raft. Get an electric trolling motor, it should push a raft along just fine without causing any trouble. For a small raft, an electric trolling motor with about 5-10 hp should be sufficient. However it will require a charger and a marine battery also.

carlos covers it nicely......"a five person raft" could be anything from a blowup toy made by Sevlor to a 5 person Avon or Zodiac you could take miles out to sea with a15 hp on it........
the key point in carlos answer is: the data plate attached to the inside of the back of the boat ( the transom) it will say how big.......or even if .....a motor you can put aboard........
electirc trolling motors are nice but you need a battery and a car size battery in a 5 person boat wont last long at all
