    Benign Tumours

    Benign tumors are not cancerous

In fact the word benign means harmless. A benign tumor is created by slower growing cells that clump together to form a lump that usually has a smooth surface. Benign tumors do not spread to other parts of the body and they are almost never life threatening. The only time that they could be life threatening is when they are located in an area of the body such as the brain where they could interfere with vital body functions. Although surgical removal is often recommended, once the benign tumor is removed it usually does not come back.

    Malignant Tumors

    Malignant Tumors are Cancerous

Malignant tumors are created by the growth of cells that clump together to form a lump that does not have distinct borders especially at a later stage of it's development when it will have roots that tend to stick out from the central lump. Tumors can develop in any part of the body. The one exception where cancers do not form a tumor is for Leukemia which is a cancer of the blood and organs that are responsible for the formation of blood including the lymph system, bone marrow and the spleen.

    A tumor is:

An abnormal growth of tissue resulting from uncontrolled, progressive multiplication of cells and serving no physiological function; a neoplasm.

    A swollen part; a swelling.

Tumor is a general term to describe a collection of abnormal cells that can form anywhere in the body.

Tumors are staged according to how normal or abdormal they appear.

The word benign means that the tumor has not yet become cancerous. Some tumors never move beyond that stage, but every tumor has the possibility of turning into cancer. That is why it is often recommended to have the tumor removed. Just because a tumor is staged as benign does not mean that it cannot be life threatening. A benign tumor has the capability of growing and invading surrounding tissue. So, much depends upon the location of the tumor too.

As time goes on a benign tumor can become pre-cancerous and than eventually it can become malignant.

Much depends upon the circumstances surrounding the tumor, its location, its appearance, and its aggressiveness whether it becomes malignant or not. But the possiblity always exists that a tumor can become malignant.

A malignant tumor has the ability to metastasize or travel throughout the body. Malignant literally means cancer.

Tumors of any kind should be taken seriously and removed if they can be. Sometimes doctors will not remove certain kinds of benign tumors because it is extremely rare for them to turn cancerous . . however, if a tumor is present there is always a risk.

The term is now primarily used to denote abnormal growth of tissue. This growth can be either malignant or benign. It is similar in meaning to a neoplasm.

Hi I am an RN. A tumor is a mass of cells that bunch together and keep splitting and expanding. Unlike a cyst, they are not usually fluid filled and can cause pain or not. There are many websites you can visit to help you. All tumors are different depending on the region it's located in because cells differ in all regions! Good Luck!
