Have a look here: http://www.scantips.com/begin.html and here: http://www.aarp.org/learntech/computers/howto/Arti... There are two types of a scan: a scan that produces a graphic image (picture) and a scan that, with the use of OCR (Optical Character Recognision) built-in to most modern scanners, will change any graphic text into editable text.

put your paper in your'e scanner (you do have a scanner don't you?)

hopefully the is a scan button on the scanner, press that and folow the prompts.

if that doesn't work, open an image editing program (I think paint will work) and there is usualy an item to scan from the file menu, often called "aquire" or in paint it says "from scanner or camera"

you will get some settings jut click OK (or scan or simalar) the first time (play with the settings later) and your image should scan.

you should now be able to save this file (file menu| save as...)

Some scanners (like the other chap mentioned) are able to scan directly with a single push of a button on the scanner itself. Saving it to "my documents" is just a location. What you want to be able to do, is open the software that came with the scanner (i hope you have installed it) - it should be listed under your program files as the vendor name (the make of your scanner) - once you scan something, select its output directory to be my documents. A word of caution, modern scanners are able to scan in very high detail, avoid scanning something at maximum quality, since this will make your final file size very large, and generally hard to work with.

every scanner has a button labeled "scan" for a quick scanning and you have to follow the instruction after that.from there you can save the file as jpeg or any file you want to your pc.
