Recommended small dog breed for an apartment?

Which small breed dog would you recommend for a moderately-sized (2 bedroom) apartment? Thx.

contrary to what someone else said, beagles are horrible apartment dogs - they need LOTS of exercise, so don't bother for one of those until you get a house where they can run around and have a huge yard to dig in.

good dogs for apartments (depends on taste too)

    toy poodle

    bichon frise

cockapoo (combo of poodle and cocker spaniel)

    cocker spaniel

    bassett hound

    daschund

cavalier king charles spaniel - these you won't find at shelters, but they are amazing dogs. They're good for apartments and look very classy, but they still love taking walks and exercising, so you can have an adorable small dog that you can take with you on a walk, or anything else.

    maltese

    chihuahua

it all depends on what you want. i would recommend going to a shelter first to see what they have, although many smaller dogs tend to be less popular in shelters than say, labs, rottweilers and other bigger dogs.

We have had two very small dogs which would be perfect for an Apartment. One was a Maltese and the other was a Tea Cup Poodle. The former is a bit "active" but the latter is a wonderful companion. They will sit on your lap for hours and require very little care. The coat of a Tea Cup Poodle is Hair NOT FUR, thus they do not shed. Our Puffles was with us for 14 years. She was a very healthy do which is true for the breed. Good luck on your search I am sure you will find the perfect companion with four legs.

Toy Poodle they don't shed! They make wonderful companions and they are smart. Only bad thing is because they don't shed you have to have them clipped about ever six week but it's worth it. You can adopt from a poodle rescue. All you have to do is a search using poodle rescue as you search term and maybe the area you are living in and you should be able to find some hit. As a matter of fact you can do that with any breed you might be interested in!

Peek-A-Poo's are a great inside dog that doesn't require a lot of space. A peek-a-poo is a cross between a pekingese and a poodle. I had a peek-a-poo for about 13 years. She was the best, most sweetest dog ever! They're friendly, good with kids (if you have them or have them in your apt. complex), easy to house train, and are low maintenance. Some other suggestions would be: dachshunds (though I really don't care for these), poodles or yorkshire terriors. Yorkies can be expensive and they are high maintenance and some tend to bark alot but otherwise are a great dog.

I'm with isis on this one. Go to a shelter. They'll have all sorts of dogs to chose from there, and someone can help you pick out a dog with the perfect size and temperament for your lifestyle.

Also, don't feel like you have to limit yourself to really tiny dogs- I live in an apartment and have a medium sized boxer / jack russell terrier mix. She's fine as long as she goes for walks each day. Just go to a shelter. I'm sure you'll fall in love with something there.

I tend towards poodles, especially the miniatures. The toys and teacups are a bit small for families with children, who can hurt them without meaning to, but they are smart, loving, bright, and don't shed. Their coat is hypo-allergenic (but hard to keep up). Others you might consider are Pappillions (be sure there's enough places to walk a lot..they like to be on the move!) and dachsunds. They are great with children, but tend to stick to one adult more than being 'everyones' dog. Happy pet hunting!!

    Boston Terriers

I'm actually looking for the same thing.

I like Shih-tzus. THey're cute, friendly and small. They are kind of hyper, but as long as you walk them sometimes, I think they'll be okay.

But get a dog from a shelter, don't get a dog from a breeder. Mutt's are smarter, healthier and better tempered.

toy poodles are a great apartment dog.

they are protective of their environment and if you have any visitors you will no about it before they knock on the door.

They do not shed so you don't have to worry about hair getting on furniture.

the down side is they need periodic grooming.

I recommend the males and crate training them

bassett hound they are lazy and not that much active and not loud meaning some dogs like poodles go crazy and bark alot bassett hounds are not like that.

beagle small sweet but are loud and are active but would be a good dog for apartment

but they are tons of breeds that are really small and would be perfect
