Check with your best friend to see if she wants you to have a fundraiser. Find out if there is something specific she needs the money for. Is her son adequately covered by health insurance. Will they be doing alot of traveling. Does she need money to supplement their current income, especially if she is missing work? Will the money be used for medical treatment not covered by insurance? Will the money be used by her son to buy something for him?
If she approves than you might want to organize a committee of neighbors, friends, and relatives. It can become quite a community event and makes people feel like they are doing something positive for this family.
Suggestions for fundraisers include:
1. If her son is still in school. Get his classmates involved in the fundraising . . with a Bikeathon, Basketball game, selling bracelets with his name on it, dances, bake sales, penny or bottle drives
2. Check with area churches for support.
3. Yard sale
4. Auction
5. Community Supper
6. Battle of the Bands
7. Alex's Lemonade Stand
8. Raffles
9. Variety Show with proceeds going to family
Sometimes if you can establish a committee of people to help you than you can do some brainstorming and come up with original ideas. Either way, the best way to reach many people is through a news story about what you plan to do. Hopefully if your friend agrees than her family can be interviewed.
Good luck to your friends son. And, have fun doing the fundraising!! (turn something negative into something positive)
Source(s): Experience. My son has cancer and our friends, neighbors and relatives had fundraisers for him. The funds helped, but we were mostly thrilled just to be in the company of all these people who supported our son. Great experience. - 1 decade ago
You are awesome! First of all, contact the leukemia lymphoma society in your area. They are an amazing resource that will be able to help your friend and her son with specific needs including help for treatment or lodging, etc. Secondly, they have a great fund raising arm that goes into the general fund that helps people like your friend and son called Team in Training and that's an excellent way to get people out and on board to help your friend and her son in spirit and in raising money. We have a friend who had been diagnosed with blood cancer 5 years ago and it was a great way to deal with our feelings, help this wonderful group, and give moral support to our friend and his family. Today, he is cancer free and doing the fund raising and creating a team centered around our friend was one of the pieces of hope that he recalls as a highlight during his treatments.

you can check with local churchs and bussiness's to get some ideas of what kind of fundraisers there are out there.
I did a found raiser for a boy who got shot in my neighbor hood and he is in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.we used the local school and did a auction, and got bussiness's around the area to donate stuff to auction, we raised about 20 thousand dollars to help with medical expences, and than we collect another 40 thousand to help make thier home wheelchiar excessiveable. it was worth all the work we did just for the boy to be able to stay home.

I know this answer isnt helping your fundraising advice. But
I am doing research on natural cures for cancer ..and this website claims...
Oregano may also be cancer preventative. It has shown modest anti-cancer activity against specific malignancies, including leukemia. [10] However, further studies are needed to determine the extent of Oregano's anti-cancer action.
If you look in the question section you will find out what i'm talking about.
When it comes to cancer...Anything is worth a try.
I wish your friends son all the luck in the world. I will pray for him.

I would suggest going to a church and talking to the pastor about using the offering that they have for maybe a couple sundays for your friend. or get in touch with the make a wish foundation. i would also suggest maybe having a huge sale like cooking something and or making food and have a bunch of people over but use admissions to let people in. talk to the schools in your area, etc

Find out what you can about his condition, and then clear it through your friend. She may not want her buisness known.
Contact a local news station and get them to do a "piece" on your friend and her son.
