He is 4 years old and was given to me for free and I have searched for a site that can do some good but can't find anything. Anyone have suggestions?

Both of these sites have been a great help to me. First in helping learn proper care of my chinchilla, then when I found out when my he was a she and had 2 kits to care for. And still help me with all my silly questions.

They are great pets! We had one for about 2 years. Go to your local Pet Store and they will have books and information for you.
I am assuming that he has the proper cage, food, and his area for his daily "Powder" cleanings. If you are not sure, here is how we took care of ours according to our Pet Stores recommendations: Make sure they have a cage big enough to play in. Put them in area where it will stay cool at all times. They like the cold. They also like to gnaw on wood. You can purchase this in your pet store. They also have to keep their pelts clean. You do not need to clean them. They CANNOT have water as a cleaning. They have a special sand/powder that they roll in. You just put an assigned bowl big enough for your pet in his cage and he will know what to do. It is the neatest thing to watch...They roll and roll and allow this powder to clean and brush their pelt. It keeps it soft. Make sure they always have enough clean water and food available. Also, they are nocturnal animals. Which means they are night time animals. They have this whistle and sound they will make at night. You will hear them running and playing at night in their cages. If you take the time to get to know your pet, he can be hand fed with treats and can be quite playful.
As a treat, they like raisins, but no more than 2-3 a day. Have fun and take care, I hope this helps.
