'slinky' who invented it!?

the slinky was invented by my father in the 30-40s

i remember it well when he would bring home boxes of the springy lil' devils and we would let them go down the stairwells in the house in Chicago.

My father just pasted away and if any one can tell me who you think was the inventer of the slinky and what it was to be originally, you will get top honors of course.

what also was the name of the factory that it was manufactured at?

I hope you all get it as many of you had enjoyed it through the yrs as i did and were/became frustrated also.

Update:

I wish to thank the people that answered the questions to the best of their ability and research.

However is was not James and his wife Betty, he was just a person who promoted the slinky after its invention and captured most of the highlights about the invention.

My father was Leonard T. Larson of Chicago and in the 30s & 40s worked in Gibson Spring Mfg Co in Chicago and in the late months of 1941 he was making rings for cars and the cutoff wheel failed periodiacally and when the wheel was ingaged, the spring of rings would fall off the table and chair aside the spring machine and bounce its way to the floor.

This was subsequently improved upon and finer oil tempered steel was used to make it work better.

This was marketed and sold later to the James Co and distrubeted worldwide.

My father died along with his wife Dorothy in the past few years in the Sacaremento Valley in California.

This project was worked on by his father and two brothers of the same company plus friends....

Richard James did in 1943 as he was working on a set of springs that could be used to support sensitive instruments on board ships. When one fell off the table the Slinky was born. They were made at James Industries in Hollidaysburg, Pa. So, Betty was your mom? What were you doing in Chicago?

The Slinky was one of my favorite toys as a kid and one I bought for my son when he was little. And one of the best jingles ever written!

My condolences to you and your family.

Some one invented it? It seemed like it just WAS one day.

Actually, it was Richard James and he was trying to make stabilization springs for war vessels during the WWII era.

Sorry for your loss. I had a slinky so your father's work touched my life.
