Recommend films to me? Similar to: Memento /Blue Velvet / Gattaca / Sixth Sense (Movies w/ twists)?
Other such movies would be "He Loves Me.. He Loves Me Not" with Audrey Tautou, Mulholland Drive, the original Psycho, the original Metropolis (1926-7), 1984, Soylent Green, etc.
I especially like weird, psychological thrillers (I don't care for Hitchcock- too bland) and movies with twists on reality. As long as the movie is "intelligently" produced, I don't care what genre it appears to be from (drama/ sci-fi/ dystopian/ romance, etc).
Please also tell me why you are recommending the movie to me. Thanks!
Some films I haven't seen that have been recommended by other websites- please tell me if you think these fit & if you'd recommend them: Pulp Fiction,Crash, Twelve Monkeys, Vanilla Sky, Blade Runner, The Machinist, Insomnia, Exotica..

'The Jacket' kind of reminds me of memento.
Anything written by M. Night Shyamalan, particularly 'Unbreakable'. (Shyamalan wrote 'The Sixth Sense' and 'Signs'.) His films are semi-weird, but works of pure genius.
'The Forgotten'. You will think you have the mystery figured out, but you won't figure out the *real* mystery. You will haveto wait til the end to find out. Good movie, especially if you like Shyamalan. (This is not a Shyamalan film, but reminiscent of his work.)
On the sappy side...have you seen the classic 'The Color Purple'? A must if you are to understand even half of what Media says.
Media...you must see 'Diary of a Mad Black Woman'. I am a white woman, and when I originally saw this movie's previews on television, I mistakenly thought it was another movie littered with racist remarks against white people. But it's not. It is one of the best comedy-dramas I have ever seen. You will laugh for days. And there is one other thing that is very surprising about this high quality and very funny film: it is about Christians, and Christians who walk the talk. And you will definitely want to see more of Tyler Perry's work, of which there is much. But this is his best movie, IMO.
'A Patch of Blue'. I would recommend this film to everyone from the most feminine woman to the biggest most macho biker on a Harley. Set in the early 60s, I think? Sydney Poitier falls in love with a blind white girl, and it's mutual. Dark without being bloody, sexy without getting graphic, and quite funny in strange places. Thoroughly unique, well written, well produced, directed, you name it. With Shelley winters as the girl's wicked mother.
Yentl. Streisand is a socialist, it's true. But if you can overlook her politics, this one is brilliant. Plus, you have to like the music.
'The Machinist' disappointed me. Anorexic Batman was interesting to look at for a little while, but the story was just too vague and nowhere for me.
'Quills'. About the Marquis de Sade in the loony bin. As sick as you want. Dark. With Joaquin Phoenix as an ethical, compassionate, but very human priest that tries to help all the crazies, Michael Caine as a sadistic quack that tortures crazy people, and the guy that played the adult nut piano player in 'Shine' as the Marquis de Sade. Great, dark film, with a twist ending.
'A Clockwork Orange'. Classic. Still shocking and amazing.
'Magnolia' is long and kind of boring in places, but in a way it's genius. Tom Cruise is disturbing in this, interesting to see. William H. Macy is...different...in this. But also interesting to watch. It's not for everyone, though. With Philip Seymour Hoffman as a sweet hetero male nurse.
That's all I got for now.

David Lynch movies - (see you've already got Blue Velvet in there - nice) Wild At Heart - worth it if only for the Nicolas Cage performance, but an awesome movie to boot, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me - helps if you watched the series, but not absolutely necessary, Lost Highway and Mullholland Drive - because the suspense doesn't really stop even after these movies are over, Eraserhead - pretty slow but the mood is undeniable. Some of Lynch's more "normal" works are Dune, The Elephant Man, and The Straight Story, but you don't really get much weirder than the films mentioned above. Lynch's style is totally his own and he has no qualms about proving it. It's almost as if he wakes up from a nightmare and writes a movie about it every once in a while (especially Lost Highway and Mullholand Dr). Some other honorable mentions (not by Lynch) are Shallow Grave (early Ewen MacGregor/Danny Boyle film), The Shining (Kubrick - just check out his entire library; all worth it), and pretty much anything by Terry Gilliam (12 Monkeys, Adventures of Baron Munchausen). Hope that helps.

Well, I would recommend the movie "Irreversible", but I don't think you should see it. It's a great story, told in a now-familiar, but still interesting way (backwards), but it examines how the smallest decisions we make can have monumental results. it's a French film by Gaspar Noe. But I don't recommend you see it because there are two EXTREMELY violent scenes in it, a beating and a rape. This is not a horror movie with phony monsters. it involved real people (well, actors). I'm a grown man and I found it hard to take, but at the end I couldn't shake the message from my head. Like I said there are two extended scenes of extreme violence. If you do see this movie, don't say I didn't warn you.
Movies that are a little easier to take I recommend are "Jacob's Ladder" (I think someone mentioned this), Dirty Pretty Things, The Serpent and the Rainbow

My favorite because of twists is Frailty. There are at least 8 twists at the end that you don't see coming. Also unlike most movies with more than one twist they don.t undo each other. If you like twists this is a must see. What I liked most about it was the overwhelming feeling of "Wow I didn't see that coming" I felt at the end. Also unlike most twist movies you can watch it many times.
Another movie I like for single movie long twist is Dog Soldiers. It is a werewolf movie but the twist that they play out well is they are not fighting helpless people but trained armed and experienced British soldiers. It also uses old style makeup effects instead of computer generated.
Hope you do watch and enjoy these

The Game (Michael Douglas) has the best plot/twist I've seen.
Planet of the Apes (original)
Your question:
Pulp Fiction is very good, although the construction of the plot is odd (viewing of the story is chopped up), but there isn't a twist per se.
Twelve Monkeys is very good.
I was going to put Vanilla Sky, but you said "intelligent". There is a twist, but I thought it was stupid.

American Beauty
Secretary, with James Spader and Maggie Gyllenhall
The Handmaid's Tale-- creepy, I think it could happen... imagine being Robert Duvall's love slave-- yikes!
Wide Sargasso Sea-- a midrash on Jane Eyre, very hot
Ghost World-- w ith Thora BIrch and Scarlett Johannsen as best friends
Outside Ozana-- a sleeper that reminds me of Magnolia
Being John Malkovich
Goodbye Lover with Ellen Degeneres and Patricia Arquette--hilarious
Stigmata-- Patricia Arquette again, hitting on a priest...
Fight Club
Vicious Circles-- another sleeper, sexy and clever

genuinely creepy film with a twist that freaked me out...
recommend it cos it's a great, atmospheric film and could be classed as a psychological thriller...which would suit you. and its one of my favourite films...
ps dont bother with vanilla sky... check out abre los ojos, the original spanish film by amenabar. pulp fiction and blade runner are must sees anyway and for 'intelligently produced ' films, try pi and primer...
