What does it mean when there is white smoke coming out of the muffler when my car is in park?
hey everyone.. i just bought a used 2000 dodge intrepid. I got it yesterday and it has been working fine, until today sometimes when im stopped, the oil light will light up for a little bit. but once i start to move, it goes away. so i go and buy some oil and put some in, and once i get home and i have the car on sitting in park, there is white exhaust coming from the muffler. (i dont know if it just started doing it after i got the oil, but i strongly doubt thats the problem) On my mom and dads car it doesnt do this, so i am looking to you car experts for some help.
what does this mean? Is it serious? If you need more information, email me @ sportzplaya4life@hotmail.com
UPDATE* right as i was finishing this, when my dad got to his house he called me and told me his was doing it also (2006 GTO). So we think it is just because we were driving in my car and not his. But just to make sure, is this a problem?

I would have to agree. It sounds like condensation from the tailpipes. Burning oil is usually a blueish color and has well, a burning oil smell

engine has wear in it thats why oil pump is having hard time to keep pressure when idling..as far as the white smoke like most have answered it is condensation of water. I'd be more concerned over low oil pressure when idling. Unless you live in a cold natured state I would up the weight of the oil to 10 - 40 or straight 30 weight something to see if the pressure is better when idling ...JMHO I have an eclipse that has over 100 thousand on it I have to change the oil more often to keep oil pressure up when I idle I also run 10 - 40 in it

you will get a little bit of white smoke from the exhaust especially if it's cold out, the catalytic converter produces some water when converting the exhaust gases. if there is a lot of smoke it's probably a headgasket.

If you live in a cold climate it is only condenation from the hot exhaust and the cold air.
