Why is it everyone's 'standing'/ ,'status' on YA so important?

In this setting, if I am Top Gun, I am obviously "superior" to you. (Of course it's a load of malarkey; it just means I know how to play the system here, but any claims of true superiority is smoke and mirrors, done to make me feel good at your expense.)

The only thing that matters is the points, which allows you to rise through the levels and do more of what it is you are already doing
