WARNING! SPOILER! Question about "The Departed"...?

I'm wondering if it makes any sense that he was an FBI informer. If he was an informer, why wouldnt the FBI break up the whole racket? And what was he informing them about? All the stuff that he was in charge of himself?

Is it me or does that not make sense?

    It didn't make sense to me either. The FBI wouldn't get information from the mob boss...because they would be after the boss.

    That was one bit of info that didn't make sense to me either.
