The Talit is worn only after marriage.An un married male may wears once only to go up to the Torah or to lead the prayer.which stigma is attached to it for not wearing one after a certain age.

This tradition varies. In most a person between the ages of 13 and marriage may still wear the tallit, however, in some the child does not until marriage. Check with the Rabbi in your community for the recognized practice in your synagoge.
