Do you recognize this fungus?

Question

It grew alone on the cut surface of a firewood log (tree type unknown) and is shaped like a slightly deflated blimp, with the long axis parallel to the wood's surface. It is 1.5 inch long and 0.5 inch wide at its widest point, is black or v. dark brown and has a pebble-like finish with grain size about 0.05 inch. It is pretty tough and is undamaged, seems hollow, has no features like gills, and is attached to the wood via a curved stem at one end. (Toughness, color and finish may have been different when it was younger.)

Update:

I've browsed several excellent fungus websites but haven't seen anything resembling this, even when only looking for the shape.

ya ,i have seen it in my farm house but i think its not so tough.i saw it few years before.acc to me it grows during rainy season ,slowly it loses moisture and become hard .initially it is light brownish -yellow ,later become dark.
i think wat i ans is wat u asked.

i think i know of what you speak but i am sorry that i cannot name it.  Try looking at www.wikipedia.org under fungus.  It might have a picture with a name beneath. The link is in the MySources
