What is the Alannah Myles song "Black Velvet" talking about?

The only thing that makes sense to me, is that she's refering to Elvis. Do you know what this song in about?

Update:

So why the title "Black Velvet?"

It's about precisely that. Elvis's effect on his fans was like Southern preachers motivating their parishioners...religion that'll bring you to your knees!

Pretty incredible stuff. I thought it was John Haughm when the vocals came in lol. I cant believe something like that was around in 1969, but I wouldnt call it black metal. Sure the sound is there, but not quite enough, and it obviously isnt a metal song, because theres no distorted guitars, but still great stuff. As for the first genuine black metal song Ive no idea since the first-wave was arguably not entirely black metal, in fact I'd consider most first-wave black metal to be just blackened thrash. Bands like Celtic Frost didnt have the vocal style. Bathory was the first to use the high-pitched raspy vocal style which is now probably the defining part of black metal. IMO it wasnt until the second-wave that black metal really started to break away from its thrash roots and into its own genre.

Definitely about Elvis. Maybe the black velvet reference is to all those black velvet paintings of Elvis you see in cheap souvenir shops and roadside art sellers.

  • Yes it is about Elvis Presley.
