How do you reset a check engine light on a 2000 VW Bug?
Is it possible to do it without paying $180 bucks to the dealership?
I just hit 100,000 miles, so I think the light came on for the 100k maintenance. It's running fine otherwise.

i own a repair shop, and it has to be done by someone with a hand held scanner, auto zone can do this for you for free, and if it has any more trouble codes it will come back on again, but they do this for a lot of people, its like a free thing, and most people buy there parts from them also but have them do it,,it beats paying big money for it,,good luck,i hope this help,s,,and have a good thanksgiving.

My check engine light has been on for 6 years and 156,000 miles later. No one has been able to find out why. It doesnt run bad, all items that could cause it have been replaced one time or another. I still get 34 miles per gallon. I actually has been shutting off by itself lately.

disconnect your battery for 10 minutes or so and it will turn off the lite. It will also wipe out the computer memory and it will reprogram itself. It will also erase your radio memory if you have stations stored. No big deal. The worst thing is you won't know what the trouble was that turned the lite on. You can purchase your own code scanner also. They are available for about $50 or less if you shop around. I got mine on e bay for $11.00

Mine came on recently (on a '02 jetta) when I replaced my air filter and my bro forgot to plug the sensor back in. It threw the code even after we plugged it back in. About after a day or two of running fine and not having any problems, it ended up going away on its own.

Yeah depends where you live though....Auto zone has generic scanners that will pull the code for you and reset it, if you have a problem, it may come back though....or find someone in your area that has a VAG-COM, and they can do it for you, or just your neighbor hood shop, would be much cheaper than a dealership....
