It is possible that the infection may have cleared up, but there is still residual fluid in the middle ear space. If this fluid is not infected, you may not even know it's there, as it will likely not be causing you any pain or discomfort. However, any residual fluid can cause your hearing to be "muffled" - this is called a conductive hearing loss. Conductive hearing loss means that the hearing nerve is fine - the sound is just not reaching the nerve normally (ie - the fluid in your ear blocks the transmission of the sound). Conductive losses are often temporary - when your ear "clears", the hearing typically returns to "normal". As long as the active infection has cleared up, it is very unlikely that this will cause permanent loss. It is important, however, that that fluid leave your ear eventually. In most cases, the middle ear space will eventually re-absorb the sterile fluid, however, in some cases, the fluid remains.

Your best bet is to see an Ear Nose and Throat doctor. He/She will likely recommend a hearing test and/or a tympanogram which can confirm the presence of fluid. You can then decide the best way to proceed.

It is possible for an ear infection to cause hearing loss, but it is not too common that it becomes that serious.

As long as you are treating the infection, you should not have any permanent damage..

It just might take longer than what you would expect to be back to "normal" again..

The ringing (tinnitus) is very likely the result of your ear infection. Chronic middle ear disease (repeated ear infections) that involve a rupture of your eardrum can most certainly result in a permanent hearing loss. However, a single case of ear infection is really not likely to end up with permanent deficits. An ear infection can take up to 6 mos to completely resolve. And the tinnitus can last that long also..and using the drops can make the tinnitus worse....not permanently mind you, just because you are adding something to your ear. If the drops are Garasone...I would **NOT** use them. Alot of family docs still prescribe them...but if you have a hole in your eardrum, Garasone can actually destroy your sense of balance.

Your balance organ (labyrinth) is attached to your hearing organ (cochlea) and garasone contains gentamicin...which is toxic to the ear.

Overall though...if it is irregular for you to have ear infections.....and this is a one time deal....your hearing should return to normal. Good luck.

In at least one instance, the noise heard could be real. In other words, there is a real source of the noise that you hear. This is known as Pulsatile tinnitus.

this, you would be able to hear your own heart beat, and it could drive you completely crazy because you would have to live with the constant beat all

the time - no pun intended.

There's another difference. There's at least one more person who can hear these noises, and that is your doctor. The person will however need to use a

listening device to hear them. Do take note - this is not the same as listening to the heart beat with a stethoscope. Here, the doctor will use a listening

device to hear the noise at your ear, and not your chest.

What causes Pulsatile tinnitus? You could be hearing your heart beat if you have high blood pressure, have arterial damage, and even due to changes in

the flow of blood. Sometimes, a lot of stress, anxiety or depression can also cause this condition.

Otitis media is an inflammation of the middle ear segment of the ear. If the infection is left unattended, it may become chronic and can cause the partial or permanent hearing loss. Consult an ENT specialist.

Please see the webpages for more details on Otitis media.

It could leave you with permanant hearling loss if your eardrum is damaged. If you don't think your doctor has helped you, go get a second opinion.
