Points? I don't get why people get so competitive about them?
I was answering a question earlier today, and one user's answer was, "thanks for posting a stupid question, I got points for answering it and you lost points for asking it" and I thought to myself, why the hell do you care if you have more points than me? What is this, a competition?? Why do people give a cra.p?

People who are very competative usually have egos that are seriously affected when they aren't on top. It could also be due to low self esteem and getting points is sort of a boost of confidence. it's stupid but if it means nothing to you, you've just added a few years to your life cuz it's REALLY not worth the stress or hyped over. it's yahoo answers! it's not like we win money.

I think that at some point or another it was simply turned into a competition. There are only a certain number of original things to do in the world and people compete to be the best they can at those things. Apparently getting points here has become one of them. Another thing that may have caused people to be competitive is the fact that Yahoo! Answers has made a leaderboard. I am sorry that you got such a comment however, and you can report users for doing such things if you really think that your question was valid. It's not much, but it's something...

Because the more points you get, the higher the level you reach. A lot of people want to be in the top level with the rest of the elite.
I just want to get the highest ratio in points/best answers to a given category. You get honorable mention for a week and you get to ride the Yahoo! Answers float in the Thanksgiving Day Parade.

points are just an incentive to move up the leaderboard. you also need points to ask questions. the more you answer and vote the more points you accumulate. you cant do much else with the points but it adds to the fun, as long as you keep in mind that you are here to help people with the knowledge you have.

I know what you mean. I am in fact embarrassed that I am on over 3000 points as does that mean I don't have a life? I never use what is allocated per day anyway so what does it matter?

I think Henry Kissinger's quote says it best: "... because the stakes are so small." People care about the most useless things in the world, because that is what they can control in their mundane lives.

Bragging rights, as more points indicate that I am better than you
[No, it doesn't; I'm just using it as an example]
