I found the quality of the butter makes all the difference. I use European butters with a higher butterfat and then just follow any buttercream frosting recipe, like the following:

    4 cups powdered sugar

    1 cup unsalted butter

    1 teaspoon vanilla extract

    3 tablespoons milk

cream together sugar and the butter.

    add the vanilla.

add the milk and beat on a medium speed until it is a spreading consistency.

if needed add additional milk, 1 teaspoon at a time until desired consistency is reached.

I like the one on the domino confectioners sugar box...you can

add milk a little at a time.yum yum

by the way, if its too sweet for you, add a three ounce bar of

    cream cheese.
