Mysterious slot in the back of a 2000 Chevy Blazer.?

In the cargo area, there is a slot molded into the plastic trim piece, but there isn't a corresponding slot on the other side. Does anyone know what this is? I went to the Chevy dealer and he said that they all had them, but no trim level had anything that went in there. I find it hard to believe, but if you ask someone that doesn't know, what else could you do?

Sorry guys, it isn't for the spare tire mount or anything. The spare is under the truck and the jack is in its own compartment.

I also don't believe that it is a design thing to add stiffness to the panel, it sticks out about 1/4" and has vertical reinforcement right in the middle to give it strength. It leads me to believe that something goes in there on at least an occasional basis and Chevy wanted to make that part of it last.

The owner's manual doesn't have anything about it and the Haynes manual only tells how to remove the panel.

The slot is about 4" and sticks out 1/4". In the middle, there is reinforcement for that slot going vertically.

I wonder if there is some kind of flange on older car seats (baby seats) that used to go in there. Cars nowadays have the LATCH system, but that didn't exist in 2000.

    I think you are right in thinking it it for a LATCH system a few years ago. Beyond that it is pure speculation. Good Luck

    If its about 3 inches below the top of the rear panel ,i would guess thats where the rear cargo retractable shade slides in.I may be way off base here ,but this is all that i remember that fits into slots.

    Do you think it is where the inside the truck full size tire mount comes out of the plastic?

    It could be a design to help stiffen the panel and keep it from making noise??
